Arriving in Rio de Janeiro!

Rio de Janeiro has two airports:

Dicas de viagem para o Rio de Janeiro

  • Santos Dumont, which receives flights from the air bridge (Rio – São Paulo) and some from Belo Horizonte, Brasilia, Vitória, Campinas and Porto Alegre. If you can, arrive at this airport and begin your trip with the view that gives the city its name.
  • The international airport is Galeão (or Tom Jobim), which is on Governor’s Island. There are also some direct flights from most Brazilian capitals.

The cheapest way to get out of the airport or bus station is to take an air-conditioned bus, called a frescão in Rio de Janeiro. You will pay cheaply and you will comfortably reach the center or south of the city, although it will take a little longer. We simply don’t recommend it if you have more than two suitcases.

If you want to use less economical options, you can take a taxi (special, priced and common, priced or metered), call an Uber, or even leave the airport (Santos Dumont) with the brand new VLT and continue traveling by metro. (to the most famous neighborhoods in the south, Botafogo, Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon, São Conrado). Another possible option (from Galeão) is the BRT bus, which has an express bus route to Barra da Tijuca, Recreio and almost the entire western area.

Arriving in the city by bus, you will disembark at the Novo Rio bus station, located in the port area, where you can also use the VLT+ metro to get around.
