What is the itinerary for the Petrópolis Teresópolis Trekking?

Day 1: Serra dos Órgãos National Park Headquarters – Petrópolis x Castelos do Açú
The first day of the Petrópolis Teresópolis Trekking is the most demanding. During the 11 km hike to the Açu shelter, you will ascend approximately 1,100 meters. The Morro do Açú trail passes through dense forest with a steep climb up to Pedra do Queijo. The walk becomes slightly less steep until reaching Ajax, where there is a water supply point.

After Ajax, you will reach the most challenging part of the ascent to Castelos do Açu: Isabeloca. This climb is named after a supposed passage of Princess Isabel in the area. Once you conquer Isabeloca and cross the Chapadão, you will arrive at Castelos do Açu, the first overnight stop and where the first shelter of the Petrópolis Teresópolis Trekking is located.

The view from Castelos do Açu is the perfect reward for the first day of hiking. From there, you can see Rio de Janeiro, Guanabara Bay, and the entire mountain range of Serra dos Órgãos.

Day 2: Castelos do Açú x Pedra do Sino
The second day is undoubtedly the most beautiful section of the Petrópolis Teresópolis Trekking. The entire route is at an average altitude of 2,000 meters. After leaving Castelos do Açu, you cross a valley and then ascend to the summit of Morro do Marco. After descending this hill, you arrive at Vale do Luva, and after ascending to the summit of Morro da Luva, the trail continues along a rocky ledge, where navigation can become tricky in misty weather until reaching the Elevator section.

The Elevator is a steel-bar ladder attached to a steep rock that provides access to the summit of Morro do Dinossauro. From the top of Morro do Dinossauro, you get the first grand view of Pedra do Garrafão and Pedra do Sino. After descending to Vale das Antas, the trek continues to the summit of Morro da Baleia, from where you can see the cliffs of Pedra do Sino, Garrafão, and the canal where Cavalinho is located.

Cavalinho is a rock that requires a movement similar to mounting a horse to cross. After crossing the Cavalinho, the trail continues through the canal until reaching Pedra do Sino, where the trail splits, giving access to the summit of Pedra do Sino and Shelter 4. Pedra do Sino is the highest point of the trek. From its summit, you get an incredible 360º view, with vistas of various mountain ranges in the region, Rio de Janeiro, Três Picos, Pico das Agulhas Negras, and Serra Fina.

Day 3: Pedra do Sino x Serra dos Órgãos National Park Headquarters – Teresópolis
The third day of the Petrópolis Teresópolis Trekking is the least demanding. The trail covers approximately 12 km to the dam, the final point of the trek. During the descent, you cross two waterfalls, with the highlight being the Véu da Noiva Waterfall in Teresópolis, 16 meters high, which is dry at certain times of the year.

1st “Elevador” (Elevator)

A short vertical ascent that requires the use of hands for support, using metal rods anchored into the rock as well as natural cracks and holds to push the body upward. Although not considered a climbing section, proper technique and physical effort are essential to overcome it safely.

2nd “Mergulho” (Dive)

A steeper descent where hikers must use their hands to support the body and maintain balance while descending the rock face. On humid days, it can become more challenging due to weather conditions and accumulated fatigue along the crossing.

3rd “Cavalinho” (Little Horse)

One of the most iconic points of the crossing, located on the ascent to Castelo do Açu. It consists of a climbing move where the hiker must “mount” the rock, using hands and feet to push the body upward. Despite the exposure, it is a manageable section with proper guidance and basic experience on technical hiking terrain.
