Rock Climbing on Sugarloaf Mountain – Coringa route
How to get there: Head to the Sugarloaf cable car station in the Urca neighborhood. The park’s main entrance is located on Avenida Pasteur, near several bus lines that stop in Urca. Once there, follow the Cláudio Coutinho trail, which circles around Morro da Urca. There’s no signage for the rock climbing routes along the trail, but it’s a popular spot for climbers, so you’ll likely see others ascending, which can help guide you.

How to get there: Most rock climbing baptisms take place in Urca, either on Morro da Babilônia or Sugarloaf Mountain. Head to Avenida Pasteur and enter the Sugarloaf cable car park, which provides easy access to both mountains. For Morro da Babilônia, the starting point is located on Rua Marechal Cantuária, which also has beginner access.

The rock climbing route is in the forked path, which is fenced off to prevent people from wandering into the rock climbing area. The Via Italianos is one of the most famous intermediate-level routes that leads to the summit of Sugarloaf.
Tip: As one of the most popular routes, it’s best to arrive early to avoid waiting and enjoy the incredible views during the climb.
Rock Climbing K2 route – Corcovado
How to get there: Head to the Cosme Velho neighborhood, where the entrance to the Corcovado train is located. Instead of taking the train, follow the road that the vans use. At a right-hand curve, you’ll see a guardrail on the left—pass through the guardrail and follow the trail that leads to the rock climbing routes. Alternatively, you can start the trail to Via K2 from Parque Lage, following the signs for Corcovado via the old slave road (“caminho dos escravos”). The K2 route provides a unique rock climbing experience, leading to the summit of Corcovado near the Christ the Redeemer statue.
Tip: This route requires a bit more physical preparation and rock climbing experience. It’s highly recommended to do this climb with a guide, especially if it’s your first time.
