Pedra Bonita is one of the most sought-after hikes in Rio de Janeiro. It’s the ideal challenge for those looking for a light walk with few obstacles and, of course, the beautiful views of the Marvelous City!

Pedra Bonita stands at 693m of altitude and is located in sector C of Tijuca National Park, overlooking some of Rio de Janeiro’s famous beaches such as Ipanema, São Conrado, and Leblon. It also offers a great view of the Tijuca Forest and Two Brothers Hill.

Due to its privileged location, the Pedra Bonita area also features the only free-flight take-off ramp in Rio de Janeiro, where you can experience Tandem Paragliding or Tandem Hang Gliding. The free-flight ramp has a small grandstand to comfortably watch the take-offs. It’s also an excellent spot for taking photos and enjoying the scenery.

Where is the Pedra Bonita hike?

It is possible to access Estrada da Pedra Bonita via Estrada das Canoas or Alto da Boa Vista. Arriving early allows you to park your vehicle at the same location; otherwise, you will need to leave your vehicle at a square toward São Conrado, about a 15-minute walk from the entrance to Estrada da Pedra Bonita.

By accessing Estrada das Canoas, you will find signs from Tijuca National Park guiding the way to Pedra Bonita.

How to get to the Pedra Bonita hike by public transportation?

By metro:
For those taking public transportation to the Pedra Bonita hike entrance, we recommend the metro. Take metro line 4 and get off at São Conrado station, specifically at exit C. The metro also offers integration with buses and trains. From São Conrado station, you can call an Uber or take bus line 448 towards Alto da Boa Vista. Get off in front of the road that leads to Pedra Bonita.

By bus:
For those coming from Rio’s West Zone, the best option is to take a bus to the Alvorada terminal in Barra da Tijuca. At the terminal, take bus line 525 (General Osório) and get off at Estrada Lagoa-Barra. From there, take bus 448 towards Alto da Boa Vista and get off in front of the access road to Pedra Bonita.

For those coming from Rio’s North Zone, the best option is to take bus 301 or 302 heading to Alto da Boa Vista. Get off one stop after the Fire Department Battalion, cross the street, and walk up to the access road to Pedra Bonita, about a 30-minute walk, or take bus line 448.

For those coming from the South Zone or downtown Rio, the best option is to take any bus heading to the West Zone and get off at the São Conrado footbridge. From there, take bus 448.

Note: Bus line 448 does not pass frequently, so be prepared to wait. If you return at night, you are unlikely to find the bus to go back down. The only areas with cell phone reception are the Free Flight Ramp and the Pedra Bonita summit. At the parking lot, cell service is usually unavailable, so calling an Uber might be difficult.

How to get to the Pedra Bonita hike by car?

By car:
For those coming from the South Zone, the best option is to head towards São Conrado. Cross the Zuzu Angel tunnel via Gávea or take the Leblon coastline, crossing Niemeyer Avenue, which offers a beautiful sea view.

Upon arriving in São Conrado, pay attention to the signs indicating the entrance to Estrada das Canoas. Go up the road and watch the left side of the lane, where you will find the entrance to Estrada da Pedra Bonita—you will be on the opposite side of the lane. Simply head up towards the access road to Pedra Bonita.

For those coming from the North Zone, take Alto da Boa Vista up towards Estrada da Pedra Bonita. After the Fire Department Battalion, turn left and follow the sign to the access road to Pedra Bonita.

ATTENTION: On the access road to Pedra Bonita, the climb is very steep, and in some sections, only one car can pass at a time. Driving requires caution and some experience with steep hills.

The parking lot fills up quickly on weekends, as it is an easy and very famous hike in Rio. Arrive early to secure your spot!
