RIO DE JANEIRO – BRAZIL
RIO DE JANEIRO – BRAZIL
On this page you will find everything you need for your trip to Costa Verde.
Costa Verde is a region in Brazil that extends from the southern coast of the state of Rio de Janeiro to the northern coast of the state of São Paulo. It includes the cities of Mangaratiba, Angra dos Reis, Itaguaí, and Paraty in the state of Rio de Janeiro, and Ubatuba, Caraguatatuba, São Sebastião, and Ilhabela in the state of São Paulo. The name comes from the expressive presence of Atlantic Forest that still exists along this stretch of the brazilian coast.
The Costa Verde region was awarded as one of the 10 best regions in the world to travel to by renowned international tourism media outlets. The destinations in Costa Verde are close to the capital and offer an almost untouched coastline. This includes everything from mountains to islands and nearly deserted beaches. According to the latest study from the ministry of tourism, Rio de Janeiro is the most visited capital city by foreigners traveling in Brazil for leisure and the third most desired city by brazilians. The brazilian Costa Verde is a paradise for lovers of nature and adrenaline. It is possible to experience everything from hikes through protected atlantic forest to kayaking tours and dives with rich marine fauna and flora.
Among the highlights of Costa Verde is Ilha Grande in Angra dos Reis, protected by several conservation units. Another highlight is Ponta da Juatinga in Paraty, protected by the Juatinga State Ecological Reserve. The colonial city of Paraty, an icon of the region, became famous for producing high-quality cachaça. It was the outflow point of the Estrada Real, through which gold and diamonds extracted from the interior of Brazil circulated.
In addition to these, the entire massif protected by the Cunhambebe State Park also offers several options. The state of São Paulo has, as its highlights, the cities of Ubatuba and Ilhabela. The Costa Verde region has much to offer tourists who visit it.

Costa Verde, located between Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, is a mosaic of cultures that reflects the history and identity of indigenous peoples, caiçara communities, colonial traditions, and portuguese influences. Each city in the region, such as Angra dos Reis, Paraty, Mangaratiba, and Ilha Grande, carries unique cultural expressions preserved over centuries and experienced daily by its residents.
Caiçara culture is one of the region’s greatest treasures. Born from the blend of indigenous, portuguese, and african peoples, it manifests in artisanal fishing, the direct relationship with the sea, and the strong value placed on community life. In Paraty, this heritage merges with the colonial legacy preserved in its historic center, where popular festivals, religious celebrations, and cultural events honor local music, dance, literature, and gastronomy.
Traveling through Costa Verde also means diving into centuries-old traditions. Festivals such as the one dedicated to Nossa Senhora dos Remédios in Paraty and events held by traditional communities on Ilha Grande preserve rituals and strengthen the region’s cultural identity. In every village, visitors find stories, local handicrafts, and artistic expressions that invite them to discover the territory in an authentic and welcoming way.
Gastronomy in Costa Verde is an invitation to the senses. Influenced by caiçara, indigenous, and portuguese traditions, it highlights fresh ingredients, daily caught fish, and local products. Traditional dishes such as fish roasted in banana leaf, moquecas, pirão, and a variety of seafood are central elements of the region’s cuisine.
In Paraty, the famous production of artisanal cachaça enhances the gastronomic experience, with traditional distilleries open for tours and tastings. In Angra dos Reis and Ilha Grande, seaside restaurants offer dishes that combine simplicity, freshness, and the essence of coastal life.
The flavors of Costa Verde reveal the soul of the place: food prepared with time, tradition, and respect for nature. For lovers of good cuisine, it is an opportunity to taste authentic recipes that have been passed down through generations and carry the emotional memory of local communities.
Exploring Costa Verde is to live an experience that goes beyond landscapes: it is to feel the strength of caiçara culture, discover preserved traditions, and savor the region’s rich local gastronomy. Between mountains, islands, and historic villages, each city offers a genuine encounter with the history, art, and flavors that make the region one of the most unique destinations in Brazil.
Live the culture of Costa Verde on your trip.

However, each period of the year offers different experiences for those who wish to explore this coastal region between Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, known for its beaches, mountains, and preserved atlantic forest areas.
SUMMER – december to march
With high temperatures that can exceed 30°C, summer is the hottest and rainiest season of the year. The days are long and perfect for enjoying the crystal-clear beaches and boat trips around Paraty, Ilha Grande, and Angra dos Reis. Despite the rains, especially in the late afternoon, this is the most popular season for tourists seeking sun, sea, and summer festivities.
AUTUMN – april to june
With milder weather, little rain, and temperatures ranging between 18°C and 28°C, autumn is ideal for outdoor activities such as walks, hikes, and historical tours in Paraty. It is also a period with fewer tourists, allowing for a more peaceful experience in the region’s natural and cultural attractions.
WINTER – july to september
The days are drier, with temperatures between 15°C and 25°C. Despite the slightly colder weather, winter is excellent for hikes, ecological tours, and exploring the charm of historic towns. The sea becomes clearer and the clean skies favor diving and photography.
SPRING – october to november
With temperatures rising again and little rain, spring combines warmth with stable weather. The vegetation is lush, and it is a great time for ecotourism activities, waterfalls, and observing the fauna and flora of the atlantic forest.
When to go?
The best time to visit Costa Verde depends on your travel style: if you prefer excitement and warm weather, choose summer. If you seek tranquility and contact with nature, autumn and spring are ideal. Winter is perfect for those who want milder temperatures and a more contemplative style of tourism.
Regardless of the season, Costa Verde offers incredible landscapes and memorable experiences between the sea and the mountains.

Traveling to Costa Verde is synonymous with adventure, nature, and breathtaking landscapes. However, as in any tourist destination, it is important to follow some safety recommendations to ensure a peaceful and unforgettable experience.
Before traveling, confirm all your accommodation, tour, and transportation reservations. Avoid hiring last-minute services from informal providers. Prefer accredited agencies, such as Nattrip, which offer structure, safety, and trained professionals.
During hikes, boat tours, or activities in remote areas, always follow the instructions of the guide in charge. They know the region well and are prepared to conduct the activity safely.
Wear light and comfortable clothing, proper footwear for hikes, sunscreen, insect repellent, and a hat. For water activities or longer hikes, bring drinking water and a light snack. Don’t forget personal documents and a fully charged phone.
In urban or busy areas (such as tourist centers, boarding points, and central beaches), double your attention with your valuables. Avoid leaving backpacks, phones, and cameras unattended.
The weather in Costa Verde can change quickly. Avoid hiking or navigating during storms or rough seas. Always check the weather forecast and follow the technical team’s guidelines.
If you are traveling with children, keep them close at all times, especially during hikes, at waterfalls, beaches, and on boat tours. Teach them about nature care and safety.
Although the region is quite safe, avoid walking on trails, beaches, or isolated areas after dark without proper guidance.
Not all areas in Costa Verde have cell phone service. Inform your accommodation or tour operator about your planned routes and estimated return times. Having a communication plan in case of emergency is essential.
Costa Verde is home to conservation units and sensitive ecosystems. Do not leave trash in nature, do not feed wildlife, and respect the limits of protected areas.
Relying on the support of an agency like Nattrip ensures not only an enriching experience but also safety protocols in accordance with ABNT standards and guides trained for unexpected situations.
Enjoy your trip with safety and peace of mind. Costa Verde awaits you with its natural charms and unforgettable experiences!
